Learn German with Goethe House Wisconsin!

Whether you are an absolute beginner or well on your way to mastering the German Language, we have a class for you! Our Classes are varied and communicative. Speaking, listening, reading & writing are practiced in situations based on real-life. Each Class is oriented to topical and inter-cultural subject matter. Themes based on regional culture provide a variety of opportunities to approach the subject of German-speaking culture.

Our classes are taught by qualified instructors who either have a university degree in German as a modern language, German studies, or a teaching degree. Our instructors also have qualifications in methodology, and are experienced in teaching German. Our instructors will keep you informed of your learning achievements on a regular basis, and can advise you as to how you should approach your continued learning most effectively.

Goethe House Wisconsin’s classes are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This means that the language skills you acquire in our courses can be measured objectively and are internationally comparable.

Classes meet once per week for 9 weeks unless otherwise noted. The course fee is $250 for standard 9 week courses.

  • German 101-105 are A1 Level classes
  • German 201-205 are A2 Level classes
  • German 401 and above are B1+ Level classes

CEFL Reference Levels

Basic User
101 – 105       A1
Can understand & use familiar everyday expressions & very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce self and others & can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows & things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Basic User
201 – 205       A2
Can understand sentences & frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple & routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.  Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Independent User
401+               B1+
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

  • German 202 A2 Level  — Fridays 5:30-7:30 beginning January 17th ($250)
  • German 101 A1 Level  — Wednesday 6:00-8:00PM beginning January 15th (This class is for beginners. No experience necessary. $250)
  • German 103 A1 Level  — Tuesdays 6:00-8:00PM beginning January 14th ($250)
  • German 104 A1 Level  — Thursdays 6:00-8:00PM beginning January 16th ($250)

Spring 2020 Schedule:

 

  • German 405 B2 Level — Mondays 6:00-8:00PM beginning March 30th
  • German 102 A1 Level — Wednesdays 6:00-8:00PM beginning April 1st
  • German 203 A2 Level  — Fridays 5:30-7:30PM beginning April 3rd
  • German 104 A1 Level  — Tuesdays 6:00-8:00PM beginning March 31st
  • German 105 A1 Level Thursdays 6:00-8:00PM beginning April 2nd

Summer 2019 Schedule:

 

  • Conversation A1-A2 — Tuesdays June 16 – July 7th 6:00-7:30PM ($75)
  • Conversation B1+ — Thursdays June 18 – July 9th 6:00-7:30PM ($75)
  • Intensive German 101 — Tuesdays & Thursdays August 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27, & Sept 1, 3, 8 6-8:00PM ($250)

Exams:

Goethe House Courses are based on the levels defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. On successful completion of a level our students can choose to take the corresponding Exam through the Goethe Institut Chicago.

Goethe Institut Chicago exams are available to all interested parties and can be taken regardless of age and nationality. They are designed to demonstrate knowledge in German as a second language and/or as a foreign language. Goethe Institut Chicago offers Exams for all levels of ability ranging from A1 – C2.
